THAI MEDICINAL PLANT EXTRACT “HING-HAI” INHIBITED ADHESION OF COLON
CANCER CELL LINE, SW620

Abstract:
Thai medicinal plants are widely used both in purified form and a mixture in various approaches.
Hing-Hai is a mixture of Crotalaria verrucosa L, Bridelia ovata Decne, Artocarpus heterophyllus
Lam, Artocarpus lakoocha Roxb, Derris scandens Benth, Carissa spinarum L, and Carissa spinarum
L. It is well known in treatment of colon, liver and lung cancer. However, there was no scientific
supporting its efficacy. We cultured SW620, the colon cancer cell line in the presence of various
concentrations of Hing-Hai compared to vehicle control and assayed for cell viability by MTT. We found that SW620
cell proliferation was retarded in dose dependent manner in the presence of Hing-Hai. Apoptotic induction and cell cycle
were studied to address the mechanism of Hing-Hai in inhibiting of cell proliferation. However, there was no any change
in both assays compared to untreated cells. Inhibition of adhesion was then performed. The result showed that Hing-Hai
significantly inhibited adhesion of SW620. It also reduced rate of cell movement in gap-filling assay compared to
vehicle control group. In conclusion, we proposed that Thai medicinal plant extract named Hing-Hai provided a promise
benefit in treatment of particular cancer. Active ingredient is now on going identified.
